Entertaining AKA Surviving the Tornado

Last night, our families through my fiance and I an engagement party which was held at our house.  We had a great time with delicious food and drinks, and all our guests left happy and full.  We had absolutely beautiful weather for out outdoor soiree as well which was especially significant as yesterday was exactly one year away from our entirely outdoor wedding.  Yes folks, after being engaged for what has seemed like an eternity, we are able to do a year countdown.  Whew!

The party started at 6pm and lasted until about 10pm when everyone agreed that they were thoroughly exhausted.  My fiance and I realized that literally from the moment the party started to the very end, we were completely busy with making sure everyone had the food and drinks that they needed, holding babies, talking to relatives, making sure my fiance's nieces didn't jump into the bonfire, protecting our cat who was completely freaked out by all the activity, and so on.

The night went so quickly, and we didn't even really get to sit down and socialize very much!  Is this what the wedding will be like?  The thought kind of freaked me out until I realized that we would have a small army on our wedding day that will do all the behind the scenes stuff, but even so, simply making sure we talked to everyone at the party was a feat unto itself!

Well...weddings are chaotic no matter how much planning goes into them. The only thing you really can control is your attitude towards everyone and everything that day. I made a concious decision to be laid back, easy-going and fun during our big day. I knew that if it wasn't already done, it wasn't going to get done. And I knew that things were going to go wrong and there was nothing I could do about it! So my care-free attitude rubbed off on the entire wedding party! It really worked! Nobody felt rushed or stressed and everyone had a blast!
It was easy for me because I was one of those annoyingly organized brides AND I had a day-of coordinator (www.excepevents.com). Both are largely contributing factors to the ease and fun of our day.
Ways we were able to talk to the majority of people after the ceremony: Our ceremony and reception were held in the same place with a cocktail hour between. So DH and I split up (not on purpose! Just happened that way!) and we talked to most of the people during the cocktail hour. During the dinner, since we were the first to eat and the first done, together we went around to tables of people we missed and talked with them. But once the party got started, I didn't talk to anyone else! I was too busy dancing! It was MY party and I wanted to have fun!! Lol! So if people wanted to talk to me, they had to find me! It all worked out really well for us. Everyone we spoke to said it was the best wedding of the year that they had attended! (Makes me smile!)
So, I guess my point is, with all the chaos, don't sweat the small stuff! Nobody will remember/notice! And remember that this is the day you marry hour best friend! DON'T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!!!!
