Four Types of Invitation Styles: Modern, Floral, Flourished, and Steampunk!

by Jenny Bryde 7. November 2010 02:48

The aspect of our wedding that took the longest for me to figure out was our stationery suite.  I wasn't sure what I wanted in a wedding invitation, and when I started to look for examples on the internet, I was floored by the vast array of designs out there.  It was really overwhelming, but being that I had a longish engagement, I had time to narrow down the choices.

As is often the case on our QCWeddings.com blog, my long, drawn-out neuroses turn into your shortcuts!  Wahoo!  I thought it would be nice to start featuring some of the major design categories that I encumbered while in the midst of the decision making process.  The next series of posts will feature various designs, print types, and mediums that can be used for wedding invites.  My goal is that this series of post will be helpful for those of you at the beginning of this process.  Most of our local print shops and wedding invitation designers can help you even further narrow down your choices and come up with something that is just right for you taste and budget.

I'm going to start today with four popular styles of wedding invitations.  There are countless graphics, backgrounds, fonts, etc. that can be used to come up with an overall style for an invitation suite, and here are some major categories...

Minimalistic Modern - Bolt fonts, lots of bare space, and vibrant color palettes make up the characteristics of a modern wedding invitation style.  Modern is often equated with a simple design, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring.  Check out these great examples below:

Floral - Lush and romantic, flowers are a staple symbol of romance around the world.  From the classic rose to peonies to sunflowers to daffodils, an invitation can feature flowers that match your bouquet!

Flourish - Curves, swirls, and intricate penwork dance on the front of many wedding invitations.  With a charm for the hand-written correspondence, many brides love the look of a flourished wedding invitation.

Steampunk - For the slightly adventurous yet old fashioned bride and groom, steampunk wedding invitations have popped up everywhere!  They feature throwbacks to vintage advertisements, arts and crafts, wanted posters, and other iconic typography.

The next post on invitations will feature even more styles for your consideration!  And if you've fallen in love with the examples that I've scrounged up, click on the pictures, and it will take you right to where you can buy them!

Happy paper hunting!  :)
